Versatile Processing for High-Performance Sandwich Structures

ROHACELL® PMI foam cores offer exceptional versatility when it comes to composite manufacturing. Whether you’re working in aerospace, automotive, marine, or renewable energy applications, these high-performance foams are compatible with virtually all common composite processing methods, making them ideal for both precision engineering and high-volume production.

Compatible Processing Methods

ROHACELL® and ROHACRYL® foams integrate seamlessly into established composite workflows. The materials are fully compatible with resin infusion techniques including RTM, VARTM, VAP, and MVI processes. They perform excellently in prepreg autoclave applications as well as Quickstep® techniques for accelerated curing cycles.

For automated production environments, ROHACELL® works effectively with tape laying and fiber placement systems, closed molding technology, filament winding, and pultrusion processes. This broad compatibility means manufacturers can adopt these premium foam cores without significant changes to existing production infrastructure.

Single-Step Bonding and Curing

One of the most significant advantages of ROHACELL® foam cores is their ability to support co-curing processes. The facings can be cured and bonded to the core material in a single work step, dramatically reducing production time and labor costs.

Unlike alternative core materials, ROHACELL® does not require stabilizing agents, potting materials, or additional stabilization cure cycles to provide lateral strength—this is already an inherent property of the foam structure. The homogeneous cell structure ensures zero print-through to the composite face sheets, delivering a Class A surface finish consistently.

Processing Parameters

ROHACELL® high-performance foam can be processed at temperatures up to 235°C and pressures up to 0.7 MPa over several hours. This exceptional thermal stability and creep compression strength allow for excellent consolidation of fiber-polymer composite face sheets during processing, as well as very short production cycle times.

The closed-cell structure of ROHACELL® means only the cut cells at the surface are filled with resin. This characteristic saves unnecessary weight caused by permeating resin while ensuring adequate bonding to the facings.
